Credible pathways towards sustainable growth in the face of interconnected global crises: sustainable development - OECD, Paris, May 3rd, 2024
Dear Colleagues,
The current global challenges put the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at serious risk. COVID-19, climate change and conflicts have had serious impacts on food production, health, education and the environment. Progress towards the SDGs needs to be accelerated. In this regard, transformative initiatives that create opportunities to reinforce commitment to the 2030 Agenda are critical.
Brazil's firm and reinvigorated engagement and commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is evidenced by the fact that Brazil’s G20 Presidency in 2024 has chosen sustainable development as one of its three priorities, alongside social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty; and global governance reform.
In this regard, Brazil has proposed a Task Force for the establishment of a Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. We appreciate all the support from OECD as an organization invited to be part of the Task-Force and we hope that OECD can join the Alliance when it is launched.
Furthermore, after taking on the G20 Presidency, Brazil has created the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy (GIB). The GIB is structured around three axes: science, technology and innovation; the sustainable use of biodiversity; and the role of the bioeconomy in promoting sustainable development.
In our view, the bioeconomy can be considered one of the instruments with the greatest potential for promoting sustainable development in its three dimensions, both in developed and developing countries.
Moreover, Brazil is fully committed to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. We have launched several programs in order to generate concrete advances in the implementation of the SDGs in Brazil, such as the Bolsa Familia Program, the “Brazil Without Hunger” Plan, the Ecological Transformation Plan, the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon and the Growth Acceleration Program.
Furthermore, Brazil will conduct its second Voluntary National Review on the implementation of the SDGs during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in 2024. This presents a valuable opportunity for all nations to learn from the experiences of one another.
To conclude, let me refer to President Lula’s speech to the UN General Assembly last year, when he announced the creation of SDG 18, aimed at addressing racism and promoting racial equality.
Our actions demonstrate that with political will and clear objectives we can implement the SDGs worldwide.
Thank you.
