We shall never forget.

Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee,

To whom I thank for helping put an end to years of abject indifference regarding the memory of the innocent victims of 72.

Dear members of the families of the late athletes, to whom I present my deepest sympathies,

Friends,

It is an honor for me to speak on behalf of President Temer and the Brazilian Government in this ceremony, painful as it may be to recall the tragic events that brings us together this afternoon.

Brazil rejects terrorism in all and any of its forms. No justification whatsoever exists for such crimes. And the civilized world shall never accept, and never forget, actions such as the Munich massacre of 1972, the cowardly murder of eleven members of the Israeli delegation, zikronam levraká (of blessed memory).

Sport is, and must forever be, a force uniting the peoples of the world. The Olympic truce that we inherited from the ancient Greeks, and which receives every four years the endorsement of the United Nations, should remind us of our common humanity.

Fanaticism and intolerance are the very opposite of the Olympic spirit. They are abominations to be condemned and fought against.

As hosts to these Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, we honor the Israeli athletes and coaches victims of the terrorists in 1972. May their absurd and untimely death remain a warning against extremism and violence, scourges which continue to plague the world today.

Brazil takes pride in being a peaceful country, one that upholds dialogue and endeavors to bridge differences between other nations. Home to different creeds and different ethnicities. Open to all.

This is more than a political option. It is a deeply ingrained cultural trait. It is what defines us as a nation.

As we pay tribute here today to the Israelis fallen in Munich, it is my sincere hope that the Olympic spirit may inspire the whole world, and especially the Middle East.

And that the dream of peace, a just and lasting peace, may finally come true for Israel and its neighbors.

Thank you very much.

Esquecer jamais.
