Visit to Belém in Preparation for the Amazon Summit and COP30
Between June 16 and 17, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mauro Vieira, is undertaking a working visit to Belém, in the context of the launching of preparations for two major diplomatic events that will take place in the capital of the State of Pará. Belém will host the Amazon Summit - IV Meeting of Presidents of the Parties to the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACTO), in August 2023, with the presence of presidents and representatives from all Amazonian countries, and is expected to host the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) by the end of 2025.
The purpose of Minister Mauro Vieira's visit to Belém is to identify venues and facilities that could host the various events planned for the Amazon Summit and COP30, as well as engage governments, civil society, and the private sector in their preparations.
Today, on June 16, Minister Mauro Vieira visited venues that could be used for the Amazon Summit events, including the Government Palace of the State of Pará, the Hangar Convention Center, the Theatro da Paz, and the Estação das Docas.
On June 17, Minister Mauro Vieira will participate in a breakfast meeting with local representatives from the trade, tourism, and services sectors to discuss the opportunities and challenges involved in organizing COP30 in Belém.
Also on June 17, he will accompany President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, along with the Governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, in a public event regarding the hosting of COP30 in Belém.
The Amazon Summit is an initiative of President Lula aimed at fostering cooperation among Amazonian countries and other partners in favor of the sustainable development of the region.
The candidacy of the city of Belém to host COP30 in 2025 was announced by the Brazilian government earlier this year and received the endorsement of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC) on May 17, marking a significant stage in the selection process. The formal designation of Belém as the host city for COP30 in 2025 is expected to take place during COP28, which will be held in Dubai later this year.
