Visit of the Minister of Education of Ireland, Jan O'Sullivan – Brasilia, March 16, 2015
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mauro Vieira, received today, March 16, the Minister of Education of Ireland, Jan O'Sullivan. The Irish Minister will be attending events in Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in the context of the celebration of Saint Patrick's Day, Ireland's national Day, and of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Ireland. Minister O'Sullivan will attend the opening of the Consulate-General of Ireland in Sao Paulo.
Diplomatic Relations between Brazil and Ireland were established in 1975 and have been intensified from the 1990s, with the opening of the Embassies of Brazil in Dublin (1991) and of Ireland in Brasilia (2001). Cooperation between Brazil and Ireland in science, technology and innovation and, especially, in education, has grown significantly in recent years. Ireland is currently one of Brazil's leading partners in the "Science Without Borders" Programme. About 2,300 Brazilian fellowship students of the programme have been received for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the country.
Bilateral trade increased from US$520 millin in 2005 to US$ 945 million in 2014.
