Visit of the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Merkel – Brasília, August 19-20, 2015
The Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Merkel, accompanied by seven ministers and five deputy ministers of her cabinet, will visit Brazil, on August 19-20, on the occasion of the first edition of the Brazil-Germany High Level Consultations Mechanism.
The visit of Chancellor Merkel to Brazil follows new protocol, considering that, in addition to her meeting with President Rousseff, the ministers of the two countries will keep sectorial bilateral meetings with their counterparts.
The new mechanism, which establishes biennial presidential and ministerial meetings, provides the opportunity for several themes on the bilateral and global agendas, including the environment and the United Nations Organization, to be discussed at the highest level.
The visit schedule of Chancellor Merkel includes dinner offered by President Dilma Rousseff at the Alvorada Palace today. On August 20, the two Chiefs of State will review themes on the broad bilateral agenda, in addition to regional and global issues. Twenty-four meetings between Brazilian Ministers and their counterparts will also take place. Seventeen bilateral documents will be signed, which will promote cooperation and dialogue in areas such as innovation in manufacturing process, marine research, rare earths, bioeconomy, education, health and food and nutrition security.
Joint Statement on climate change, in the scope of the 21st Conference of Parties of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21), to be held in Paris, in December, and Joint Declaration of Intent on Urbanization, with a view to strengthening environmental sustainability in urban spaces of the two countries, will also be signed.
Germany is the major Brazilian trading partner in Europe and the fourth largest in the world. In 2014, bilateral trade reached US$ 20.4 billion, having virtually tripled since 2005. Nearly 1,600 German companies operate in Brazilian territory, being the largest industrial park outside Germany.
