The Brazilian Government expresses its deep concern over the violent incidents that took place between March 6 and 9 in the provinces of Latakia and Tartus in Syria, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,000 people, the majority of them civilians.
By condemning the resort to violence, particularly against civilians, Brazil offers its condolences to the families of the victims and urges all parties involved to exercise restraint.
It also reiterates its position in favor of a peaceful and inclusive political transition, with respect for Syria’s independence, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
There are no reports of Brazilian nationals among the victims. Through its Consular Portal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has updated its travel advisory, recommending that Brazilian citizens refrain from traveling to Syria and, for those currently there, to follow the security guidance issued by local authorities (https://www.gov.br/mre/pt-br/assuntos/portal-consular/alertas%20e%20noticias/alertas/alerta-consular-siria).
The Brazilian Embassy in Damascus remains in contact with representatives of the Brazilian community in Syria. In case of emergency, Brazilian nationals may reach its consular hotline at +963 933 21 34 38 or by email at “consular.damasco@itamaraty.gov.br.” The 24-hour consular hotline of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can also be contacted in emergencies at +55 61 98260-0610 (WhatsApp).
