PRESS RELEASE N. 60
UN General Assembly Resolution on the suspension of Russia’s membership in the Human Rights Council
The United Nations General Assembly on April 7 adopted a United States-initiated resolution to suspend Russia’s membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC).
Brazil decided to abstain from voting as it understands that the initiative will imply polarization and politicization of the HRC discussions. It may also result in the disengagement of the relevant actors and hinder dialogue for peace.
In order for the HRC to undertake its mission to address human rights violations in all countries with the expected universality and impartiality, Brazil believes it is important to preserve the dialogue forums through responses favoring the engagement of the parties in defense of the protection of human rights and peace.
The Brazilian Government supports the measures adopted by the United Nations in response to the conflict. In early March, we voted in favor of the HRC resolution "Human rights situation in Ukraine stemming from the Russian aggression", which established a commission of inquiry. The Brazilian Government follows the situation in Ukraine with grave concern, in particular the reports of violent deaths, torture and abuses.
The human rights situation in Ukraine will remain under careful consideration by the Brazilian Government, in light of the investigations to be conducted by the HRC Commission of inquiry and other independent bodies based on the evidence collected.
