Second G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting – New York, September 25

The second meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the G20, the group comprised of the world's largest economies, the African Union and the European Union, will be held in New York, on September 25. The first meeting of the group’s foreign ministers took place in Rio de Janeiro, on February 21-22, and discussed the role of the G20 in addressing current geopolitical tensions. The agenda for the second meeting will focus on global governance reform.

The second G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting will take place in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) meeting room at the UN headquarters, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly. This is the first G20 meeting to be held at the UN, a milestone in the history of the G20, thus reflecting the Brazilian presidency’s efforts to make its discussions more inclusive and comprehensive, bringing them to the center of the international debate. The meeting will be open to all UN member states.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will participate in the opening session of the meeting along with UN Secretary-General António Guterres; South African President Cyril Ramaphosa (the next G20 chair in the rotating presidency); and General Assembly President Philémon Yang. Following the opening session, Minister Mauro Vieira will conduct the meeting, with the participation of the other G20 foreign ministers and UN member countries.

The central theme of the meeting will be global governance reform, one of the three priorities established by the Brazilian G20 presidency. At the initiative of Brazil, discussions are being held on the possibility of adopting a “Call to Action on Global Governance Reform” with commitments aimed at strengthening the multilateral system and reforming and renewing important international organizations.

In addition to global governance reform, other priorities of the Brazilian presidency are the fight against hunger and poverty and the promotion of sustainable development and a just energy transition, an agenda which is summed up in the motto “Building a just world and a sustainable planet”.
