Results of Suriname’s General Elections
The Brazilian government congratulates the government and people of Suriname on the occasion of their May 25, 2015 general elections, which were conducted in an environment of peace and tranquility. The elections, which were followed by observation missions from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUL), offered Suriname citizens a valuable opportunity to freely express their political choices and fully exercise their democratic rights.
The Brazilian government reiterates its commitment to continue to promote and enhance cooperation and dialogue with Suriname. Suriname is an important regional and bilateral partner, an associate State to MERCOSUL, and a member of both the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) and UNASUL. It is also home to a sizable Brazilian community.
