PRESS RELEASE NO. 126
Remarks by the President of Conmebol – Joint MRE/MIR/MESP Press Release
The Brazilian government strongly condemns the remarks made by the President of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), Alejandro Domínguez, on the night of March 17, in an interview with the press after the draw ceremony for the group stage of the tournaments organized by that entity.
These remarks come in a context where Conmebol authorities have repeatedly failed to adopt effective measures to prevent and avoid the repetition of racist acts in matches organized by them, including measures to combat impunity and promote accountability for those responsible.
The Brazilian government urges Conmebol and the National Football Federations of South America to act decisively to prevent and address acts of racism, discrimination, and intolerance, promote racial equality policies, and share knowledge and best practices to increase access to sports for Afro-descendant people, immigrants, and other vulnerable groups.
The Brazilian government reiterates its commitment to initiatives to combat racism and promote racial equality, including measures against all forms of discrimination in various sports disciplines.
