PRESS RELEASE NO. 150
Recent Israeli Attacks in the State of Palestine
The Brazilian government condemns the Israeli attack carried out today, April 2, against a building in the Jabalia refugee camp, in northern Gaza, which housed a clinic operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and had been turned into an improvised shelter for Palestinians displaced by the conflict. The attack resulted in at least 19 deaths, including 9 children.
In the context of the ceasefire violation marked by the resumption of Israeli military operations in Palestine, Brazil also expresses its distress over the discovery, on March 30, of the remains of 15 humanitarian workers from the Palestinian Red Crescent, the Civil Defense, and UNRWA, who were buried in a mass grave the previous week, after having been killed by Israeli forces while engaged in rescue efforts in southern Gaza.
Brazil recalls Israel’s obligations under International Humanitarian Law to act in accordance with the principles of proportionality and distinction between civilians and combatants and to take the necessary measures to protect the civilian population in the occupied Palestinian territory. It also urges Israel to ensure the physical integrity and freedom of movement of all humanitarian personnel operating in Palestine.
The Brazilian government reiterates its call for the urgent reestablishment of the ceasefire and the resumption of humanitarian aid deliveries into Gaza.
