Re-election of the Director-General of FAO, Qu Dongyu
The Brazilian Government congratulates Mr. Qu Dongyu of China on his re-election as the Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The election took place during the 43rd Session of the FAO Conference, held at the organization's headquarters in Rome from 1st to 7th July. Qu, the sole candidate for re-election, received the votes of 168 members of the organization. He will serve his second four-year term until 31st July 2027. The Brazilian delegation to the FAO Conference is headed by the Minister of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture, Paulo Teixeira.
Brazil was one of the first countries to declare its support for the re-election of the Director-General, who met with the President of Brazil in January, in Buenos Aires, on the sidelines of the summit meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). On that occasion, President Lula reiterated that removing Brazil from the Hunger Map is a central objective of his government.
As the head of FAO, Qu has advocated for reforms and initiatives to enhance the organization's efficiency. He has also provided support to member states in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and transforming agri-food systems. The organization has also intensified its work in preventing and addressing food crises.
The Brazilian Government reaffirms its willingness to continue working constructively in partnership with FAO, in order to uphold the organization's central mandate in promoting food security and nutrition and supporting sustainable rural and agricultural development in Brazil and around the world.
