"I deeply regret the loss of Hector Babenco, my personal and dear friend and a great Brazilian film-maker.
Born in Argentina, Hector directed classic films of the Brazilian cinema, including Lúcio Flávio, O passageiro da agonia, Pixote and Carandiru. He also built an internationally-successful career with films like Ironweed and Kiss of the Spider Woman, which made him receive a best director nomination at the Oscars.
I encourage everyone to see again and appreciate the work of Babenco. This is the best tribute that can be paid to an artist of his talent and sensibility."
