PRESS RELEASE NO.387
Opening of humanitarian aid corridors to Sudan
The Brazilian government welcomed the announcement of the opening of two corridors for “safe and unimpeded access” of humanitarian aid to the Sudanese population, in the context of negotiations held in Geneva (August 14-23) and mediated by a group comprising Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Switzerland, in addition to the African Union and the United Nations.
The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, is causing one of the largest humanitarian crises in recent history, with more than 12 million forcibly displaced people and nearly 25 million people, more than half of the country's population, facing acute hunger.
The Brazilian government reaffirms its support for diplomatic efforts towards a negotiated solution to the crisis in Sudan and urges the parties to the conflict to immediately and unconditionally cease hostilities, to respect international humanitarian law and to resume dialogue.
