One-year Anniversary of the Earthquake in Haiti
The Brazilian Government reaffirms its solidarity with the people and Government of Haiti today, 12 January, one year after the earthquake that caused the loss of thousands of lives and widespread material damages.
Brazil will continue to strengthen the humanitarian aid to Haiti and support the reconstruction efforts in the country. The Brazilian Government has participated in the activities of the Haiti Interim Reconstruction Commission, which is responsible for coordinating the international aid to the country, and made a pioneering contribution to the Haiti Reconstruction Fund.
Until now, Brazil has sent approximately 80% of the US$ 172 million pledge announced at the International Donors’ Conference for Haiti (New York, 31 March 2010), for the 2010-2011 period.
In evoking the memories of that tragedy, the Brazilian Government wishes that the one-year anniversary of the earthquake encourages the renewing of the international commitment to the reconstruction, the long term development and the consolidation of democracy in Haiti, within the ongoing electoral process in the country.
