PRESS RELEASE N. 375
New date for resumption of visitor visa requirements for citizens of Australia, Canada and the United States
Decree No. 11,515, of May 2, 2023, had established that, as of October 1, Brazil would resume short-stay visa requirements for citizens of Australia, Canada, the United States, and Japan.
As announced in August, the Brazilian government and Japan reached an agreement on the reciprocal exemption of visitor visa for short stays.
As a result, adjustments were required in the bidding process to hire a company for providing electronic visa services to nationals of those three countries. This was done within the scope of the adoption of the aforementioned Decree No. 11,515.
Therefore, following the publication of Decree No. 11,692 on September 5, 2023, the new short-term visa requirement for nationals of Australia, Canada, and the United States is set to go into effect on January 10, 2024. This alteration will also allow for a longer testing period of issuing visas before the requirement becomes effective.
To protect the interests of Brazilian citizens, the Brazilian government is open to negotiating visa exemption agreements with these three countries, based on principles of reciprocity and equality between states.
