PRESS RELEASE NO. 604
Ministerial Meeting commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Cartagena Declaration on Refugees – Cartagena+40
Minister Mauro Vieira took part in the Ministerial Meeting in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Cartagena Declaration on Refugees – Cartagena+40, on December 11th and 12th in Santiago. During the meeting, 23 countries and one territory (British Virgin Islands) from Latin America and the Caribbean approved the Chile Declaration and Plan of Action 2024–2034. The document includes conclusions and recommendations on strengthening policies for the reception, welcoming and integration of refugees and displaced and stateless people in the region over the next ten years.
Adopted during the Conference on Central American and Caribbean Refugees in 1984, the Cartagena Declaration on Refugees was decisive in expanding the protection granted to refugees in the region. Every ten years, since the Declaration was adopted, a country leads the Declaration’s follow-up process, with benefits for regional cooperation and the formulation of strategies and actions adapted to challenges related to refuge in each country. Brazil hosted the Cartagena+30 process from 2014 to 2023.
