Minister Antonio de Aguiar Patriota to visit Egypt – Cairo, May 7-8, 2011
Minister Antonio de Aguiar Patriota will pay a visit to Cairo on May 7-8, 2011, where he will meet the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Nabil al-Araby, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Amr Moussa, and the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Fayza Aboulnaga.
The visit will be an opportunity to resume political dialogue with the new Egyptian authorities and to address issues related to trade and bilateral cooperation. They will also go over the current situation in Northern Africa and the Middle East, the latest developments in the Israel-Palestine peace process and matters concerning South Sudan and Darfur.
Egypt is a highly influential interlocutor in the Arab world, playing host to the League of Arab States, and has been increasingly involved in negotiations regarding Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, as demonstrated by the signing of the reconciliation agreement between Fatah and Hamas (in addition to other 11 Palestinian political groups).
In 2010, Egypt became the second extra-regional partner to sign a Free Trade Agreement with Mercosur. Thus year, Egypt rose to the third spot among Brazil’s largest trading partners in Africa and became the main destination for Brazilian exports to that continent. Trade exchange reached US$ 2.13 billion, with Brazilian exports of US$ 1.96 billion.
