Meeting held between the President of the Republic and the President of Paraguay – Foz do Iguaçu, March 16, 2023

On March 16, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met with President Mario Abdo Benítez of Paraguay in Foz do Iguaçu, on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of the new Brazilian Director General of Itaipu Binacional, Enio Verri.

On the occasion, the presidents celebrated the full settlement of the debt related to the construction of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant last February 28th and noted that next April 26th will mark the 50th anniversary of the signature of the Itaipu Treaty.

The Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant is a symbol of the friendship between Brazil and Paraguay and a historical landmark in the bilateral partnership.

The presidents reviewed the main points of the bilateral agenda, having recognized the significant advances in the works of the Integration Bridge, in Foz do Iguaçu and Presidente Franco, which should be completed in the coming months, and the Bridge over the Paraguay River, between Porto Murtinho and Carmelo Peralta.

During the meeting, President Lula reiterated the Brazilian foreign policy priority to the relationship with Paraguay and to regional integration.
