PRESS RELEASE N. 266
Joint Press Release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples - Donation of the Tupinambá cloak to the National Museum
The Brazilian Government has received with great satisfaction the news that the National Museum of Denmark will donate to the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro a Tupinambá cloak. The historical artifact of Brazilian origin is currently part of the collection of the Danish institution and has its origins dating back to the Dutch presence in Brazil during the 17th century.
The donation is the result of negotiations conducted by the Brazilian Embassy in Copenhagen, which facilitated contact between the directors of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro and the National Museum of Denmark. The initiative represents a significant cultural cooperation effort aimed at the recovery of the Brazilian museum's collection.
The Brazilian Government extends its congratulations and gratitude to the Danish government and the National Museum of Denmark for approving the donation of the artifact, which holds immense material, cultural, and spiritual value for the Brazilian indigenous peoples, particularly the Tupinambá, and will contribute to the revitalization of the history and culture of the nation's indigenous peoples. The return of this cultural collection to Brazil symbolizes the current moment of affirming the richness, importance, and diversity of Brazilian culture, with the culture of the original peoples serving as the essential foundation of this heritage.
