Israeli Attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)
Brazil condemns the attacks carried out by Israeli armed forces against United Nations peacekeeping posts in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The attacks took place in Naqoura, Labbouneh, and Ras Naqoura, resulting in the injury of two Indonesian peacekeepers and damage to the mission's infrastructure.
UNIFIL consists of more than 10,000 military personnel from 50 UN member states, including eleven Brazilian military personnel.
The Brazilian government recalls the obligation of all parties involved in the conflict to ensure the safety and protection of UN personnel and facilities and to respect the inviolability of these facilities at all times. Any deliberate attack against UNIFIL facilities or against peacekeepers operating under the UN flag constitutes a serious violation of International Law, International Humanitarian Law, and UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006), which set the terms for the ceasefire that ended the 2006 war.
UNIFIL was established in 1978 by the Security Council to monitor the cessation of hostilities along the Israel-Lebanon border, support Lebanese armed forces in southern Lebanon to ensure the area is not used by armed groups, assist in implementing Security Council resolutions, facilitate the return of displaced civilians, provide humanitarian assistance, and support the Lebanese government in restoring its authority in the area.
The Brazilian government reiterates its condemnation of Israeli attacks on densely populated civilian areas in Lebanon and renews its call for the parties involved to immediately cease hostilities in order to halt the alarming escalation of violence in the region.
