PRESS RELEASE No. 419
Explosions of electronic devices in Lebanon
The Brazilian government condemns the series of coordinated and simultaneous explosions of hundreds of communication devices that occurred today, September 17th, in Lebanon, resulting in the death of at least nine people, including a minor, and leaving hundreds injured.
These acts significantly escalate tensions in the region and heighten the risk of conflict spreading. They also demonstrate, regrettably, that the numerous appeals made by the international community for Middle Eastern actors to exercise maximum restraint have proven ineffective.
In this context, Brazil reiterates the imperative nature of fully respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations and reaffirms its commitment to the strict enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
The Brazilian Embassy in Beirut has no record of Brazilian nationals among the victims and is fully engaged in providing necessary guidance to the Brazilian community in light of Lebanon's delicate security situation.
