Death of former Secretary General of the United Nations, Boutros Boutros-Ghali
The Brazilian Government received with regret the news of the death of former United Nations Secretary General and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, today, in Cairo.
During his period as head of the United Nations Secretariat, between 1992 and 1996, Boutros-Ghali excelled by the permanent effort in support of the strengthening of the UN and its irreplaceable role as the most important global multilateral organization. In the context of the great changes that stemmed from the end of the Cold War, Boutros-Ghali led important process in favor of an Agenda for Peace, with a view to enhancing the United Nations capacity to act effectively, with emphasis on preemptive diplomacy and peacebuilding in post-conflict situations.
In recalling the work of Boutros-Ghali and expressing its solidarity to the family of former UN Secretary General, the Brazilian Government hopes that his memory will continue to inspire those who struggle, often with great difficulty, to carry out the ideals of multilateralism and peace.
