Ambassador Maria Laura da Rocha, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will head the Brazilian delegation to the 56th Special General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the election of the new OAS Secretary General. The meeting will take place on March 10, 2025, in Washington, D.C., United States.
The OAS General Secretariat, the Organization’s central body, plays a pivotal role in strengthening the institution and advancing hemispheric relations.
The incumbent OAS Secretary General, Uruguayan Luis Almagro, reelected in 2020 to a second five-year term, will conclude his tenure on May 26.
Brazil’s participation in the 56th OAS General Assembly will provide an opportunity to reaffirm the country’s commitment to regional and international cooperation, thus contributing to the construction of a more equitable, secure, and prosperous Americas.
Founded in 1948 with the aim of promoting cooperation and dialogue among nations of the hemisphere, the OAS is guided by four main pillars: the protection of human rights, the promotion of democracy, multidimensional security, and integral development.
