PRESS RELEASE N. 146
Brazil joins the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance
Brazilian diplomacy will seek to work within the IHRA to promote education and research on the Holocaust, as well as to improve national policies to combat anti-Semitism, in the context of the Brazilian commitment to combat all forms of racism, intolerance and discrimination.
Home to the second largest Jewish community in Latin America and the tenth largest in the world, Brazil is proud to have welcomed families who fled the horrors of the Holocaust. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also proud of the legacy of Aracy de Carvalho Guimarães Rosa and of Ambassador Luiz Martins de Souza Dantas, members of the Brazilian Foreign Service designated with the title “Righteous Among the Nations” by the Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Israel, in recognition of their efforts to save hundreds of Jews from Nazi persecution.
The date of November 9th, on the 83rd anniversary of the 1938 Nazi pogrom known as the “Kristallnacht,” marks the shared duty to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive for future generations.
