PRESS RELEASE N.70
Brazil is elected to the United Nations Security Council
Brazil will occupy a non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2022-2023 term. It will be the country’s 11th time serving at the most important body responsible for international collective security.
In the elections held today in New York during the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations, Brazil received 181 votes. The result reflects the recognition of Brazil's historic contribution to international peace and security.
In the Security Council, Brazil will seek to translate into tangible contributions the defense of peace and the peaceful settlement of disputes, among other principles enshrined in the 1988 Federal Constitution and the United Nations Charter. The country also plans to strengthen UN peacekeeping missions and to support mandates fostering the interdependence between security and development.
Brazil will be in a privileged position to attest to its commitment to the reform of the UNSC, to safeguard the legitimacy of the United Nations' role before the multiple and complex challenges faced by the international community.
The Brazilian government takes this opportunity to congratulate Albania, the United Arab Emirates, Gabon and Ghana, which were also elected on the occasion.
