PRESS RELEASE N. 49
Brazil assumes the presidency of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission
Today, February 2, Brazil was elected by acclamation to the presidency of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for the year 2024.
The PBC aims to advance the peacebuilding agenda at the UN, assisting countries in post-conflict transition. The Commission fills the institutional gap between the Security Council (UNSC), in its role of guaranteeing international peace and security, and the Economic and Social Council, which is dedicated to the economic progress and social development of Member States.
Brazil advocates for an integrated approach to conflict prevention and resolution, and to peacekeeping and peacebuilding. Attention must be given to the interdependence between security and development, as well as to the pursuit of inclusive and sustainable political solutions.
Brazil had previously held this position in 2014. The country was a significant actor in the negotiations that led to the creation of the Peacebuilding Commission in 2005 and has been continuously present among the 31 members of the body since 2010.
