PRESS RELEASE NO. 132
Attacks against United Nations Facilities in the State of Palestine
The Brazilian government strongly condemns the attack that took place the day before yesterday against staff and facilities of the United Nations in Gaza, which resulted in the death and serious injury of personnel from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
Expressing deep dismay over this latest episode of grave violation of international humanitarian law, the Brazilian government reiterates that all parties must respect the inviolability of United Nations premises and ensure the protection of its personnel, as determined by the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols. It further urges Israel to ensure the protection and freedom of movement of humanitarian personnel in the State of Palestine.
Brazil recalls that attacks intentionally directed at humanitarian personnel and United Nations staff, as well as their facilities and assets, are war crimes. Brazil joins United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in his call for a complete and transparent investigation into this serious incident, so that those responsible are duly held accountable.
Finally, Brazilian officials extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirm our unwavering support for the work of the United Nations and its agencies, including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), in providing humanitarian assistance in the State of Palestine.
