Attack at Iranian consulate in Damascus
The Brazilian government condemns the airstrike on April 1st on the consulate of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Damascus, which killed and wounded members of the diplomatic and consular staff.
Brazil recalls the obligatioin of all countries to observe the principle of inviolability of diplomatic and consular missions under the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic Relations and on Consular Relations, dating from 1961 and 1963, respectively.
The Brazilian government also recalls that the respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries is a basic principle of the United Nations Charter and urges all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint.
Finally, the Brazilian government expresses concern about a spread of hostilities in the region, which could result in serious and unpredictable consequences for the stability in the Middle East.
