Approval of resolution on the Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025-2034)
The 79th General Assembly of the United Nations adopted today, December 17, by consensus, the resolution proclaiming the Second International Decade for People of African Descent, from January 1st, 2025 to December 31st, 2034, under the theme “recognition, justice and development” .
Brazil, along with Colombia, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and the United States, introduced the text, which extends the Programme of Activities of the First Decade to implement measures promoting inclusion of people of African descent and combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance.
The First Decade contributed to the progressive consolidation of the international agenda for the promotion and defense of the rights of people of African descent. The proclamation of the Second Decade represents a new opportunity for people of African descent to fully and effectively enjoy the benefits of sustainable development and all their human rights.
Brazil's engagement in the activities of the First Decade and the proclamation of the Second Decade reflects the priority given by the Brazilian government to initiatives to combat racism and promote racial equality.
