Press Release No. 399
75th Anniversary of the Geneva Conventions
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), with the support of the National Commission for the Dissemination and Implementation of International Humanitarian Law and the Alexandre de Gusmão Foundation (FUNAG), co-organized a seminar on September 3 at the Rio Branco Institute to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the 1949 Geneva Conventions. The Geneva Conventions form the core of international humanitarian law.
Three discussion panels were held, bringing together government representatives, jurists, academics, and ICRC experts, with the aim of reiterating the historical importance of the Geneva Conventions and assessing their implementation over the past 75 years. The panels also discussed the major changes observed in the methods and means of warfare, which were not initially anticipated in the four Geneva Conventions; debated the regulation of new warfare technologies; and identified other challenges to the application of international humanitarian law.
The closing session of the event was attended by Mrs. Janja Lula da Silva and the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maria Laura da Rocha, who reaffirmed Brazil's commitment to International Humanitarian Law.
Also in attendance were the Head of the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Alexandre Formisano; the Director of Operations for the Americas of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Sophie Orr; and the Swiss Ambassador to Brazil, Pietro Lazzeri.
The event took place in the Auditorium of the Rio Branco Institute and is available on FUNAG's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/funagbrasil.
