PRESS RELEASE N. 211
70 years of the Lectureship Program
In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Lectureship Program, a special edition of the symposium Conecta Leitores will be held in Lisbon from May 29 through June 1, an initiative organized by the Itamaraty's Guimarães Rosa Institute, in partnership with the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), the University of Brasília, and the University Clermont Auvergne.
The Lectureship Program, recently renamed " Guimarães Rosa Lectureship", will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2023. The initiative, run by the MRE in partnership with the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education, grants scholarships to professionals in the field of literature selected to work in foreign higher education institutions, promoting the Portuguese language, Brazilian literature and culture in these institutions.
The lecturers also contribute to providing greater international visibility for Brazilian higher education, broadening the access of Brazilian professors to international academic centers of excellence, and fostering collaboration between national and foreign institutions and professors.
Over the 70 years of the program, nearly 400 Brazilian lecturers have carried out these activities, including names such as Sérgio Buarque de Holanda (University of Rome), Álvaro Lins (University of Lisbon) and Cyro dos Anjos (University of Mexico). There are currently about 40 Guimarães Rosa readers, distributed throughout thirty countries in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe.
