2nd EU-CELAC Summit: Brussels, June 10-11, 2015
President Dilma Rousseff will take part, on June 10 and 11, in Brussels, in the 2nd Summit between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (EU-CELAC). Meetings between European and Latin American andCaribbean leaders have been held every two years since 1999, when the first LAC-EU summit was held in Rio de Janeiro. Since the creation of CELAC at the end of 2011, these events have been known as CELAC-EU summits.
The CELAC-EU mechanism promotes political dialogue and cooperation in scientific and technological research, migration, the global drug problem, gender issues, among other themes. Two new areas of cooperation will be introduced at the forthcoming summit: higher education and public safety.
The European Union has been the largest source of foreign direct investment both in Brazil and in Latin America and the Caribbean as a whole. In 2011, total EU investment in Brazil was $ 303 billion. In 2014, trade between Brazil and the EU countries reached $ 88.7 billion, corresponding to 19.5% of Brazilian foreign trade.
