190 years of Brazil-Russia diplomatic relations – October 3, 2018
The 190th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Russia is celebrated today, October 3. On this occasion, foreign minister Aloysio Nunes Ferreira sent a congratulatory letter to minister Sergey Lavrov.
Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Russia were established on 3 October 1828 and raised to the level of ‘strategic partnership’ in 2002. Over the past years, ministerial and presidential meetings marked the re-establishment of the high-level agenda between the two countries. Since then, there has been a significant increase in dialogue in several areas, whether at the bilateral level or in forums such as the United Nations, BRICS and the G20.
Russia is Brazil’s main trading partner in Eastern Europe. Trade between the two countries reached 5.3 billion dollars in 2017, accounting for a growth of more than 20% over 2016. New agreements in the areas of trade facilitation and investment pave the way for the strengthening of trade relations.
In celebrating the historic cooperation between Brazil and Russia, the Brazilian government reiterates its commitment to continue working with the Russian government to further strengthen ties that unite the two countries.
