André Aranha Corrêa do Lago was born in 1959. He earned a bachelor's degree in Economics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1981) and joined the diplomatic career in 1982. In Brasília, he has served in positions in the areas of international organizations, trade promotion, protocol and energy. His overseas assignments included the Embassies in Madrid, Prague, Washington and Buenos Aires and the Mission to the European Union, in Brussels.
He has been working with sustainable development-related issues since 2001. He was Director of the Energy Department (2008-2011) and of the Environment Department (2011-2013), when he served as Brazil's chief negotiator for climate change (2011- 2013) and for Rio+20 (2011-2012). He served as Ambassador to Japan (2013-2018), to India (2018-2023) and accredited also to Bhutan (2019-2023). He became the Secretary for Climate, Energy and Environment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in March 2023 .
Corrêa do Lago has published books and articles on sustainable development and climate change and is also an architecture critic. He is married with four children.
