Resumo:Smart cities are, now more than ever, much more than just a trend. In fact, this concept has become a necessity not only for the population, but especially for the environment. As society expands and urban areas have increasing challenges of planning, coordinatio n and maintenance, smart mechanisms are becoming vital to help cities operate more efficiently and optimize the use of space and resources, which in many cases are very limited. This concept is heavily dependent on digital technologies and can benefit a lot from its evolution, as it is the case of virtual reality, which can enable visualization and interaction with the various components of the city and, more recently, the introduction of “digital twins”, whose definition comprehends exactly the already mentioned needs of smart cities, being a combination of visual, data and analysis models. As will be further discussed, although those technologies offer great advances for the development of smart solutions, the research on the subject still lacks definitions and does not have a standardized methodology. Additionally, the use of virtual reality as a 3D interface for digital twins in the context of smart cities is not explored in the literature. With that in mind, this project aims a t investigating the potentialities of using virtual reality as a friendly interface for a digital twin, which brings solutions to smart cities, applied to weather forecasting.
