Video presents Plan for conservation of the Upper Tocantins Basin
The Cerrado is a unique savannah, full of species that only exist there. Despite its importance, its natural and cultural richness, this biome faces major threats, such as mining, large-scale agriculture and inadequate fire management. One of the most beautiful and biodiverse regions of the Cerrado is the target of the National Action Plan for the Conservation of the Endangered Flora of the Upper Tocantins Basin - PAN Upper Tocantins Basin, which has just had a video released by the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (JBRJ) through the National Center for Flora Conservation (CNCFlora). Available on YouTube, the video presents the main challenges of this initiative and how the PAN team, which includes several collaborators and partners, is working to prevent the extinction of species in the region.
The Upper Tocantins Basin PAN, coordinated by CNCFlora, covers an area of 55,637 km2, encompassing segments of the Federal District and the state of Goiás, as well as 31 conservation units (CUs) of various spheres and categories. Through its actions, 98 target species are directly threatened with extinction, of which 14 are “Critically Endangered” (CR), 58 “Endangered” (EN) and 26 “Vulnerable” (VU). Another 44 species benefit indirectly from the PAN's conservation measures. CNCFlora coordinates and monitors the progress of the planned strategies.
Over a period of five years, the Upper Tocantins Basin PAN aims to expand conservation measures for target species, environments and the maintenance of ecosystem services, with the involvement of the entire society connected to the territory. To this end, actions were developed under four specific objectives that seek to generate and disseminate knowledge aimed at conservation and sustainable practices, expand conservation and management strategies in situ (on site) and ex situ (in botanical gardens, for example) of populations of target species and their environments, as well as promoting and strengthening public policies for conservation.
