UFRJazz Ensemble Orchestra and Papa vento theater liven up Sunday in the Garden
The Sunday in the Garden program has a double dose of attractions on October 27. Children can enjoy the puppet show “The Boy and the Alligator” by Cia. Papa Vento at 10 a.m. in the Children's Playground. Then there's a performance by the UFRJazz Ensemble in front of the bust of D. João, at 11 a.m.
The show “The Boy and the Alligator” tells the story of a grandmother who asks her grandson to help her dry clothes in an unconventional way, by blowing. But the boy didn't expect a rowdy alligator to show up to take the clothes away. Confusion ensues and the audience wants to get into the play to help the boy. Then Tião, a funny and mischievous character, enters the scene, making the plot even more entertaining.
After the play, there's music with the UFRJazz Ensemble. The orchestra is made up of students from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro's School of Music, as well as guest musicians, and stands out for the quality of its work dedicated to popular Brazilian instrumental music, contemporary jazz and concert music. The repertoire ranges from original works by 20th century composers, such as Stravinsky and Bernstein, to MPB classics, with arrangements made especially for the ensemble. Directed by Professor Julio Merlino, the orchestra will perform with three saxophones, two trumpets, trombone and base (guitar, piano, bass and drums).
Several musicians have performed as guests of UFRJazz, including trombonist Raul de Souza, Hermeto Pascoal, Gilson Peranzzetta, Carlos Malta and Guinga. The UFRJazz Ensemble recorded its first CD, “Jazz na Universidade”, in 1997, with compositions by the most important contemporary American composers. Their latest album, “Paisagens do Rio”, was released in 2006 and was nominated for the 5th Tim Music Prize. Tim Music Award.
The performances are free, visitors only pay the entrance fee to the arboretum. In the event of rain, the performances will be moved to the Galpão das Artes.
