Summer orchids on show at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden
The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Orchidarium is holding its first "Summer Orchids" show from February 23 to 25 (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). The event will feature two guest nurseries and various activities, such as lectures, courses, guided tours, video screenings and a plant raffle.
Orchids' great capacity for hybridization is a striking feature of this family. Man, always in search of perfection and something even more beautiful, has made use of this natural ability to produce new plants with even more perfect shapes, different colors, and which also bloom at different times of the year. The Summer Orchids exhibition presents the public with several of these hybrids, as well as some native and exotic species that bloom in the hottest season of the year.
"Through artificial hybridization (done in a laboratory), it is possible to obtain plants that flower more than once a year and at different times of the year. This has created plants that bloom in the summer, which is generally considered to be a less rich season for these flowers," explains Delfina de Araujo, curator of the JBRJ Orchidarium.
