Postponed - Special trail celebrates Water Day and the 200th anniversary of Frei Leandro's administration
Activity postponed due to heavy rain. The new date will be announced shortly.
In 2024, it will be 200 years since Friar Leandro do Sacramento (1778-1829), the first botanical director of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, took office. He made important changes to the arboretum and was responsible, among other things, for the water system that is still in operation at the Garden today.
To celebrate his legacy, on March 22 - World Water Day - the JBRJ is promoting the free guided trail "The waters of the Botanical Garden", at 10am. The public will be able to see the buildings built during Friar Leandro's time to cultivate aquatic plants, such as the lakes and waterfalls, and the monuments full of stories that make up the water system throughout the Garden. During the activity, led by teams from the institution's Environmental Education Service and Green Area Conservation Coordination, visitors will also be able to contemplate the native vegetation and local fauna of the Atlantic Forest.
The trail will start inside the Visitor Center, next to the model showing the Path of the Waters in the Botanical Garden's arboretum.
There is no need to register. The activity is free of charge, with only an entrance fee for the arboretum.
