Plant evolution is the theme of Friday Trails in February
In February, the Friday Trails program features the free guided Evolutionary Trail - in honor of British naturalist Charles Darwin, author of "The Origin of Species", who was born on the 12th of that month.
From mosses and ferns to orchids and cacti, the Evolutionary Trail shows visitors to the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden how plants have developed different adaptation strategies over hundreds of thousands of years, leading to the enormous diversity of species known in the world today.
The Trail shows 14 species with characteristics from different stages of plant evolution on the planet. Evolution deals with processes in which species undergo random mutations that favor their adaptation to the environment and the changes that occur in it.
The trail is free and there is only an entrance fee for the Arboretum. Departures always take place on Fridays at 10 a.m. from the Visitor Center and there is no need to sign up. Just arrive and join in!
