Palm tree trail is a highlight in August at the Rio Botanical Garden
Palm trees are the highlight of the Friday Trails in August at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. On the guided tour, visitors will be able to appreciate and receive information about 21 species of the Arecaceae family (the scientific name for the botanical family of palm trees).
Coconut palm, oil palm, juçara palm, açaí, among others, are some examples belonging to the palm group. The imperial palm (Roystonea oleracea), which can reach a height of 41 meters, is also a symbol of the Rio Botanical Garden. Its first specimen, named Palma Mater, was planted in the arboretum in 1809. There are currently 1,780 palm trees in the arboretum.
The Palm Tree Trail will be offered on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th. Departures are at 10am from the Visitor Center. There's no need to book in advance, just arrive and join in. The guided tour is free. There is only an entrance fee for the arboretum.
