On World Environment Day (June 5), the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden will open early, at 8 a.m., and will offer the public a guided trail with the right to plant trees in the arboretum. Places are limited and free (visitors only pay for the ticket). There will be 30 participants, and five will be drawn to do the planting. Those selected will receive certificates. Selection for the trail will be on a first-come, first-served basis at the Visitor Center at 9:30 am. The species to be planted are new to the Botanical Garden's living collection. The trail will be guided by the institution's Living Collections coordinator, biologist Marcus Nadruz.
The species to be planted are:
- Burretiokentia hapala, family Arecaceae, popular name bunch palm, origin New Caledonia
- Copernicia macroglossa, Arecaceae family, popular name for the skirt palm, origin Cuba
- Pinanga speciosa, family Arecaceae, popular name black palm, origin Philippines
- Brownea macrophylla, family Fabaceae, popular name rosa-da-venezuela, origin Latin America
