Lists of PARNA Superagui and EE Santa Bárbara add 827 records to the Catalog of Plants of the PAs of Brazil
The Superagui National Park, in Paraná, and the Santa Bárbara Ecological Station, in São Paulo, had their species lists published in the Catalogue of Plants in Brazilian Conservation Units, between September and October 2023, adding 827 records to the platform. With the two new lists, the Catalog now has 33 Conservation Units represented.
The PARNA Superagui list has 259 species so far, but the number is expected to be greatly expanded with new research. Located in the municipality of Guaraqueçaba, on the northern coast of Paraná, the park was created in 1989 and covers 21,400 hectares, including the islands of Superagui, Peças, Bertioga, Pinheiro and Pinheirinho and the RPPN Sebuí. It is in a priority area for the conservation of the biodiversity of the Atlantic Rainforest, in a region classified as being of extreme biological importance, and is the only conservation unit in the state that protects sandy beach environments.
Among the families with the highest number of species in this PA are Fabaceae (legumes) and Orchidaceae, the latter of which is also represented in the image bank published with the PARNA Superagui list. To compile the list, the authors relied mainly on the collections of researchers J. Prado, M.E. Engels and M.L. Brotto, mostly deposited in the herbaria MBM, of the Municipal Botanical Museum of Curitiba, RB, of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, and UPCB, of the UFPR Botany Department.
The List of Plants of the Santa Bárbara Ecological Station contains records of 568 species, predominantly from the Poaceae (81 records) and Asteraceae (72 records) families. Most of the botanical research at the unit was carried out by the former Forestry Institute, now the Environmental Research Institute, by Giselda Durigan and collaborators.
The survey shows five species classified as endangered and four with deficient data (DD) in this UC, which is of great importance for preserving remnants of Cerrado grassland and savannah physiognomies, rare in the state of São Paulo.
Created in 1984, the Santa Bárbara EE is located in the municipality of Águas de Santa Bárbara and its area of 2,712 hectares is part of the Middle Paranapanema hydrographic basin, with its hydrographic network made up of a few streams that drain into tributary rivers of the Paranapanema.
