In the month of the Rio Botanical Garden's anniversary, the Heritage Trail tells the story of the institution
June is the anniversary month of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. Visitors who want to learn about the history of the bicentennial institution can take part in the Heritage Trail. The guided tour will take place on Fridays this month. The route shows the main monuments and archaeological sites of the Garden, which turns 216 on the 13th. The architectural and landscape complex of the institution is listed by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN).
The Heritage Trail consists of 10 points, including buildings, monuments and archaeological sites. The starting point is the oldest building still standing in Rio's South Zone, where the Visitor Center is located today. It was built in 1576, 232 years before the Garden was founded in 1808. This was originally the headquarters of the Engenho da Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Lagoa, which also covered the neighborhoods of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Jardim Botânico, Ipanema, Leblon, Gávea and part of Copacabana, as well as the current Tijuca National Park. Rodrigo de Freitas, the owner of the mill, lived at the headquarters.
The trail also passes, among other points, the Casa dos Pilões Archaeological Site Museum - which was one of the production units of the Royal Gunpowder Factory, created by Dom João in 1808 - and the portal of the former Academy of Fine Arts, which was part of the Royal School of Fine Arts, created by Dom João.
The Friday Trails are free and start at 10 a.m. There is only a charge for the arboretum. There is only an entrance fee for the arboretum. There is no need to register, just arrive and take part. Tickets can be purchased at the box office or on the website: jbrj.eleventickets.com
