Exhibitions, trail and lecture to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day
Indigenous Peoples' Day is celebrated on April 19, as a way of recognizing the rights of the original peoples of Brazilian territory and valuing their contribution to society. To celebrate the date, the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden is organizing activities for the public. Check them out below!

Indigenous Peoples' Week at the Barbosa Rodrigues Library - Where the roots of knowledge meet the wings of imagination. This is an opportunity to explore a carefully selected collection of works that shed light on the millennia-old customs, vibrant festivities and ways of life of the original peoples of this land, learn about legends that are not just stories, but teachings passed down through the generations, and understand the sustainable use of natural resources practiced by indigenous people, an ancestral knowledge that resonates with urgency today.
Hours: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Free admission.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - The Revealed Knowledge of Native Bees by Our Indigenous Peoples - The activity, led by the Environmental Education Service (SEA), will begin at the SEA headquarters (behind the main ticket office), with a talk about native peoples and their relationship with honey. This will be followed by a hike to the Meliponário (collection of stingless bee hives) at the Botanical Garden.

The activity is free of charge and there is only a ticket for the Arboretum. Payment at the box office in cash only. Tickets online at jbrj.eleventickets.com with pix or credit card.
10 a.m. - Friday Trail: Indigenous Trail. Last chance this year to enjoy the free guided Indigenous Trail. Along the way, visitors will get to know 17 plant species grown in the Garden's arboretum, such as theVictoria amazonica, theBixa orellana, theEuterpe oleraceae and theBrunfelsia grandiflora, among others. These species have been used and managed for hundreds of years by various indigenous peoples in Brazil.
Meeting point: Visitor Center. No prior booking necessary.

2:30 p.m - Talk show "Ethnobotany supporting Collaborative and Intercultural Research in the Brazilian Amazon", with researcher Viviane Stern da Fonseca-Kruel, curator of the Thematic Collection of Medicinal Plants at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. Venue: multipurpose room of the Botanical Garden Museum. Free admission.
From 10 a.m to 5 p.m (last entry at 4 p.m) - Exhibition "Mbae Kaá, o que tem na mata: Barbosa Rodrigues entre plantas e pajés", curated by SELVAGEM - cycle of studies on life. The temporary exhibition, which occupies one of the rooms at the Botanical Garden Museum, is based on the book "Mbae Kaá: a botânica nomenclatura indígena", by naturalist João Barbosa Rodrigues (1842-1909), who was director of the JBRJ. Barbosa was also an excellent illustrator and several of his works can be seen in the exhibition, which also includes works by contemporary indigenous artists. Admission is free.
Visitors can also enjoy works by indigenous artist Denilson Baniwa created especially for the new Botanical Garden Museum.
