Botanical Garden Museum hosts Fernando Fernandez for talk on biodiversity and book launch
Biodiversity in debate
The Botanical Garden Museum is holding a special edition of Cultivating Ideas with biologist and professor Fernando Fernandez next Thursday (10/4) at 5pm. The event invites the public to a talk about the themes covered in his new book, The Mastodons with Full Bellies and Other Stories, followed by a book signing. Participation is free, subject to prior registration via the following link: https://forms.gle/kcUdcqdXjSupve5d8. There are 50 places available.
Part of the Museum's monthly program, Cultivating Ideas creates a space for dialogue between experts and those interested in topics related to biodiversity and conservation. In this edition, Fernandez will discuss issues such as ecology, interactions between fauna and flora, the impact of human action on ecosystems and the challenges of environmental preservation, central themes of his new book.
Recently launched, Os Mastodontes de Barriga Cheia e Outras Histórias presents chronicles written in accessible language, covering ecology, paleontology, evolution and conservation philosophy. The work follows the line of his previous book, The Imperfect Poem: Chronicles of Biology, Nature Conservation and Its Heroes, which sold over 10,000 copies and reinforced the importance of scientific dissemination for raising environmental awareness.
Fernando Fernandez is a full professor in the Department of Ecology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), with a master's degree in Ecology from UNICAMP and a PhD from Durham University. Founder of the Population Ecology and Conservation Laboratory, he works on research into conservation, paleoecology and ecological restoration. Creator of the concept of refaunation, he coordinates the Refauna project, which seeks to restore native fauna in protected areas. In addition to his academic work, he is a columnist for the O Eco website and actively participates in debates on biodiversity and sustainability.
