Biodiversity Forum welcomes Manuela da Silva, the General Manager of Fiocruz's Biodiversity and Health Biobank
The sixth edition of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden's Biodiversity Forum will take place next Tuesday, October 8. This month's guest is Manuela da Silva, general manager of the Biodiversity and Health Biobank at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), who will discuss the topic: Digital Sequence Information and Biological Collections and Biobanks.
The activity, aimed at specialists, researchers, students and other interested parties, will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Museum's Multipurpose Room. Admission is free. There are 50 seats, on a first-come, first-served basis. The forum will also be broadcast live on JBRJ's YouTube channel. A certificate of participation will be issued to both in-person and online audiences.
Conceived by a curatorial board made up of JBRJ experts, the “Biodiversity Forum” is held monthly at the Botanical Garden Museum and each edition features the participation of an expert to present reflections, research results and studies from publications on biodiversity conservation, always with the aim of broadening the debate and spreading knowledge about climate emergencies and other related issues. The meetings are also in preparation for the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden's participation in COP 16 on Biodiversity, which will take place in Colombia in October this year, and for COP 30 on Climate, which will be held in Belém do Pará in 2025.
About the guest
Manuela da Silva has a degree in Biological Sciences from UNESP, a specialization in Mycology from the International Mycological Institute-CABI/UK, a Master's and PhD in Food Engineering (Microbiology/UNICAMP). Since 2002, she has worked at Fiocruz, being the Coordinator of Biological Collections for 12 years. Today, she is an Advisor to the Vice-President for Research and Biological Collections (VPPCB) and General Manager of the Biodiversity and Health Biobank for human biological material and viruses. She is also Vice President of the World Federation of Culture Collection (WFCC); a member of the Executive Committee of the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN); and of the Ethical, Legal and Social Issues (ELSI) Committee of the Earth BioGenome Project (EBP). She is also a member of the Digital Sequence Information Scientific Network, coordinator of the Academia Sector Chamber of the Genetic Heritage Management Council (CGen/MMA) and a CGen advisor for the SBPC.
The Botanical Garden Museum has master sponsorship from Shell Brasil and management from IDG - Instituto de Desenvolvimento e Gestão. Inaugurated in March 2024, the new space will present to the public, through exhibitions, interactive content and cultural programming for all ages, the pioneering work of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute for the knowledge and conservation of Brazilian flora.
