Biodiversity conservation in the Pantanal is the theme of the Biodiversity Forum on July 9
The challenges, perspectives and public policies for the conservation of biodiversity in the Pantanal will be addressed by researcher Walfrido Tomas (Embrapa Pantanal) at the 3rd edition of the "Biodiversity Forum", on Tuesday, July 9, at 2:30 pm, at the Botanical Garden Museum.
Held by the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden, this month's Forum commemorates the National Day of Science and Scientific Researchers, celebrated on July 8th. At the same time, it debates a topic that is even more important at the moment, when the Pantanal is suffering from the longest drought in 70 years and its ecosystems are threatened by fire. JBRJ's Director of Scientific Research, Leonardo Tavares Salgado, will mediate.
With a master's degree in Wildlife Sciences from Oregon State University and a doctorate in Ecology and Conservation from the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, Walfrido Tomas has been a researcher at Embrapa Pantanal since 1990, a member of the Technical Scientific Council of the National Institute for Pantanal Research and an advisor to the Brazilian delegation to the OECD Biodiversity Secretariat. He conducts research into landscape management, ecological corridors, sustainability indicators, population modeling and monitoring, as well as assessing the impact of deforestation on biodiversity. He is currently coordinating the Biodiversity in the Pantanal Landscapes project, which is part of the Pantanal Natural Capital Research Network.
The Biodiversity Forum is a monthly meeting for specialists, researchers, students and interested people. In each edition, a guest expert presents reflections, research results and studies on biodiversity conservation, always with the aim of broadening the debate and spreading knowledge about climate emergencies and other related issues.
Admission is free and 50 places are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The event will also be broadcast live on JBRJ's YouTube channel.https://www.youtube.com/jardimbotanicodoriodejaneiro
