In the month in which we celebrate Atlantic Forest Day (May 27), the Atlantic Forest Trail is the highlight of Friday's Trails at the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. The walking trail takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and features 27 species of this biome present in the Botanical Garden's arboretum, such as jatobá, chichá, paineira, ipê-roxo, vinhático and bromélia-imperial.
The Atlantic Forest is one of the richest biomes in diversity of plant species in the world, many of them threatened. Most (95%) of these species occur in Brazil, and the rest in Argentina and Uruguay. The biome covers approximately 15% of the Brazilian territory, extending over 17 states (from Ceará to Rio Grande do Sul). Most of the Brazilian population (72%), seven of the nine largest river basins in the country and three of the largest urban centers on the South American continent are in the Atlantic Forest area.
The Friday Trails are guided by the JBRJ Visitor Center staff and are free of charge; there is only an entrance fee for the Arboretum. There is no need to register, just arrive and participate.
